Vorstadt, Stempelbild
4b, 100 x 150 cm, linoleum cut on packing paper, 1991
In 1991, Ute Pleuger began a series...a study of architecture
through the use of linoleum and wood cuts.
In Pleuger's catalog, "Serial Spaces", Werkbund-Archive, Martin-Gropius-Building,
Berlin, 1996, Kathrin Becker wrote the following:
"The reduction of representation, which she [Pleuger] achieves in painting
through the renunciation of details and by limiting her colors, is carried
to further extremes in the “Stempelbilder” (stamped images): the elements
constituting the facades are transformed into individual “stamps,” i.e.,
geometrical print forms, from which the facades are assembled. Pleuger
is concerned with the boundary between representation and abstraction,
which she delineates as the turning-point between illusion and exemplar...Abstraction
is intensified through the serial production of the picture-elements; the
facade is subjected to a systematization which results in the repetition
of individual picture-elements."
